
The global market for African crafts has grown enormously — and so has the market for imitations. Mass-produced items bearing African-inspired patterns are sold in tourist markets, high-street shops, and online platforms worldwide. Some of these items are beautiful. But they are not the same as genuine handmade African crafts, and they do not support the artisans who hold these traditions alive.
Here is how to tell the difference.
The single most reliable indicator of genuine handmade craft is irregular, consistent human imperfection. A handwoven kente cloth will have slight variations in the width of the strips. A hand-thrown terracotta pot will have subtle asymmetries in its walls. A beaded necklace strung by hand will have slight variations in the spacing of beads.
Mass-produced items are characterised by mechanical perfection — precise uniformity that human hands cannot achieve. If every element is exactly the same, it was almost certainly made by a machine.
This is not a flaw in genuine handmade work. It is its most valuable quality. The irregularities are the evidence of human presence — they are, in a sense, the maker's signature.
Every genuine African craft has a story. The adire cloth has a maker with a name, a location, a technique. The beaded necklace was made by a specific community with a specific tradition. The carved mask comes from a particular cultural practice.
If a seller cannot tell you where the piece came from, who made it, and what tradition it belongs to — be cautious. Generic African provenance ("made somewhere in Africa") is not the same as specific cultural documentation.

This does not mean genuine craft must be expensive — many beautiful pieces are affordable. But extremely low prices for apparently complex handmade work should prompt questions.
Different craft traditions use specific materials. Maasai beadwork uses small glass seed beads, not plastic. Moroccan leather should smell of vegetable tanning agents and age beautifully. Kente should be woven of cotton or silk, not synthetic fibres.
Feel the weight. Smell the material. Look closely at the construction. Genuine craftsmanship reveals itself through material quality.
